3 Emerging Social Media Sites

Blog Post By: Airi Hosaka, Baer Performance Marketing Intern

While Facebook has basically dominated the social media landscape for the last 10 years, every month we see new, emerging platforms—many fail, some are gobbled up by the bigger players, and a small handful find standalone success. It’s important to pay attention to all of these cases. The failed platforms illustrate what users don’t want to see. The platforms consumed showcase the features major players like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn will be adding in the near future, and the successes provide new marketing opportunities for businesses.

Here are few platforms that are currently on the rise:

Periscope:
Periscope is a hot, new platform allowing users to broadcast what is going on around them anytime from anywhere without any time limit for video like Instagram (15 sec) or Vine (6 sec). Periscope’s main users are men between the ages of 16-24.

Many businesses can benefit by integrating Periscope into their marketing strategy. Through Periscope, it’s easy to create a personal connection with customers by showing them what is really happening inside the company. Businesses are using the platform to broadcast behind-the-scenes footage, tutorials, product demos, and customer feedback.

Quora:
Quora is a platform where users go to ask questions and get answers. A business can use the site two ways: If you have an industry-related question, you can use the site to potentially get an answer. However, businesses can also spread brand recognition and information on services and products by answering questions as an industry expert.

Wanelo:
Wanelo is a social shopping platform, with the name being made up of the words ‘want,’ ‘need,’ and ‘love.’ Users spend their time on the app browsing through millions of products sold by major brands as well as independent artists. Users can use the app like Amazon to create wishlists and also connect with friends to see the products they are interested in. Experts see the platform rivaling Pinterest.

Get out of the habit of waiting for social platforms to become “the next Facebook.” Follow the trends, and become an early adopter to increase your chance of success.
