Choosing the right marketing agency can be a career defining (or destroying) move for any business owner or executive. Things like SEO, content marketing, social media management and media buying all seem daunting to the manager who has a million other things on his or her plate. It is imperative that you make the right decision if you want to grow your business and optimize your message. With so many agencies competing for your business, it can be a daunting task separating the signal from the noise.
Here’s a few questions to ask to winnow down your list of prospects:
Does the agency have expertise in relevant areas? There are thousands of specialty shops out there that handle only one or a handful of marketing tasks. Don’t hire an agency that specializes exclusively in digital advertising when you need more traditional work done, and vice versa. You don’t want your agency learning on the fly.
Does the agency have a strong digital presence? If they don’t, you won’t.
Does the agency get good reviews? Happy clients leave happy comments.
Does the marketing of the agency’s current and former clients reflect well on their work? They’ve probably listed current and former clients on their website. Research them.
Does the agency market itself well? If they don’t care about their own marketing, they won’t care about yours.
Has the agency worked with clients in your industry? They may struggle to market your company if they don’t understand it.
Is the agency too big or too small relative to the work you need done? An ideal agency will have the resources to get the job done while giving your campaigns the personal attention they deserve. Cookie cutter approaches do not work long term.
Ultimately, your search for the right agency can be a pleasant experience when conducted properly. Find an agency that does great work and cares about its clients, and you’ll be off to a great start.
