Google Algorithm Changes, May 2020

It is no secret that Google changes itself quite frequently.  On any given day, Google can implement a handful of small updates to how its algorithm works for both searchers and businesses looking to “move up the ranks.”  These constant updates assure that the results provided to the end searcher are of the highest relevance to the term searched.  Last week, Google started making larger-than-normal changes with their broad core algorithm update, which started rolling out on May 4.  These larger updates may have an impact on how your business is found.

The smaller updates which Google implements normally do not have a noticeable impact on your day-to-day business operations; this is not the case with the new May broad core algorithm update.  This update will cause the organic search results to shuffle.  This means, even if your company was ranked steadily at “number two” in organic search results, following this update, it’s possible you won’t be found until page three or four!  We are not trying to scare you; we are just simply stating the worst-case scenario.  The update isn’t penalizing your site for SEO issues; it is, however, finding more relevant results for the searched keywords.

You may ask, “How do I fix this?”  To remedy search engine ranking issues caused by these updates, the quality of a website’s content must be improved.  Google is looking to change itself from a search engine to more of a “librarian” or “content curator.”  This entails providing you personalized search results based on your past search history.  It will store past searches and provide relevant results based on those past searches as well as new ones.  For example, if you were searching for 2018 Toyota Tundra parts, then, on a separate day, started searching for windshield repair, Google would show you results based on a 2018 Toyota Tundra windshield. Providing consistent, quality content updates to your website is more important than ever to  “move up the ranks” with the #1 search engine.
