Not content to sit on the sidelines, Meta—the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—is making a power play while Twitter is trying to survive a rough patch. The Verge, citing a leaked Substack newsletter, reports Meta is poised to release a brand new, text-based social app that analysts believe could give Twitter a run for its money. Codenamed P92, the new app is said to be called Threads, and screenshots suggest it has a feed that looks like a blend of Twitter and Mastodon. According to the report, users would be able to post text updates up to 500 characters, along with photos and videos.
According to insiders, Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, didn’t mince words during a company-wide meeting. He reportedly said Threads is Meta’s answer to Twitter while taking a swipe at the competitor’s oft-criticized owner, Elon Musk.
“We’ve been hearing from creators and public figures who are interested in having a platform that is sanely run, that they believe that they can trust and rely upon for distribution,” said Cox to staffers.
Threads wouldn’t be the first social media site trying to seize some digital space from Twitter. Bluesky and Mastodon are two apps that have already attracted users from Twitter, but Meta could have a much easier time building a bigger user base in a brief amount of time.
Threads’ main advantage would be its seamless ability to integrate with Instagram by using ActivityPub, a decentralized social networking protocol. This would allow Instagram users to effortlessly move their followers over to Threads. Setting up a profile also promises to be a breeze, with the app auto-filling profiles using Instagram account information. Plus, the raw numbers are in Meta’s favor: Instagram’s 1.3 billion active users are more than double Twitter’s 550 million active users, which could fuel rapid growth for Threads in the days after launch.
Behind the scenes, Meta is taking a slow and steady approach to this race and rumored to be testing the waters with influencers, creators and high-profile names to get them on board with the project. Oprah Winfrey and the Dalai Lama are names that have been mentioned, which, if true, would generate quite the buzz!
Stay informed, folks, because the social media landscape might soon be in for a seismic shakeup.
