Social media, especially Twitter, is here to stay, so why not join in? Twitter to most can be a little overwhelming—so, we would like to provide a step-by-step on how to set up your business Twitter account.
1. Sign up
While on your computer, bring up the Twitter homepage. On this page, you will see the area to set up a new account. Enter your full name, email and a password you will remember. Click “sign up for Twitter.”
This will bring you to a screen where you can fill out account info. You will also choose your username on this screen. Your followers will use this username to search for you. To ensure you don’t take up too much room out of those 140 characters of a retweet, keep your username short and concise. For example, we chose @baerpm for our twitter username.
When choosing a password, use a combination of letters, numbers and symbols to prevent any hackers from accessing your account. Once you are completed with this screen, click on “Create my account.”
Before you can get started personalizing your company’s profile, you’ll need to confirm your account. Twitter will send you an email to the address you provided, and that email will include a link that verifies your account. Click on that link or button to activate the account. Congratulations, you’re now on Twitter!
2. Start making connections
Upon initial login, Twitter will help you make these first connections. Twitter will suggest companies, celebrities, sports figures and comedians to follow. Add at least five new connections to start your timeline. Search for other Twitter accounts you like. This can be customers or other businesses that are rocking Twitter.
3. Update profile details
This part of the setup is fun. Click on the profile picture to upload an image which is distinguishable when it is shrunk. I would suggest using your business logo. The cover photo can be a more visually appealing. You are also able to update your location, website and a 140 character bio about your business.
4. Send your first Tweet
Now that the hard part is finished, it is time to start having some fun and connecting with people. Remember with Twitter your updates are limited to only 140 character–so be concise without sounding like a teenager. This is a great platform to connect with your customers and show the personality of your business. Just remember with tweeting and other social media, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it.” – Warren Buffet
Now get out there and start having some fun!
